Widening the Bridge SCN Podcast Episode 1 - Eric Ayles
Podcast by the Spiritual Care Network hosted by Jason Pullin. Episode 1 features an interview with the SCN President Eric Ayles. More about the Spiritual Care Network at www.SpiritualCareNet.org Eric founded the Spiritual Care Network out of a deep awareness that people facing mental health challenges and addiction often fall into the gaps between mental health care and spiritual support. Through his work with treatment professionals, faith communities, and families in crisis, he repeatedly saw that these groups cared deeply but were working in isolation, without a structure for collaboration or education. He recognized that when providers, recovery professionals, and spiritual leaders work together, individuals in crisis experience better support, continuity, and hope. But to make that possible, someone needed to build the bridge to bring together faith leaders, mental health professionals and community resources. The Spiritual Care Network began as Eric’s response to that need. He envisioned a community where mental health providers, addiction recovery specialists, and faith leaders could meet one another, learn from each other, and work side-by-side. From its beginning, the SCN has remained rooted in that simple purpose: to bridge the gap between mental health and faith.

Making Sense of Our Stories: Three Lenses that Help Connect the Dots
SCN Webinar: Making Sense of Our Stories: Three Lenses that Help Connect the Dots Presentation by Salvador Delmundo, Jr. - Chaplain from the Menninger Clinic Hosted by the Spiritual Care Network Zoom provided by Starlite Recovery Center Objectives: The work of counseling primarily involves listening to stories, appreciating narratives as they are presented, and helping the storytellers interpret and make sense of their lived experiences. As counselors, we sift through these stories, helping our clients identify thought patterns and schemas that lead to problematic thinking and propelling problematic behaviors. Drawing from Augsburg (1992), Lee (1995), and Nathan and Kim (2013), my presentation will discuss/explore three “lenses” that clients generally utilize as they frame significant events, identify primary characters, and weave their stories together in an attempt to make sense of their world. We will also look at different passages from the Gospel’s discourse narratives where these lenses are employed and appreciate how they can help our clients create hopeful future stories. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to: 1. Name and describe each lens and identify how these are reflected and revealed as clients share their stories and recognize significant people in their lives. 2. Identify and illustrate implications where these lenses can be helpful and where they can hinder clients’ framing of their past, present and future stories. 3. Locate passages from the New Testament discourse narratives and identify where these lenses are appropriated in helpful ways. Insights from these readings can strengthen our understanding of these concepts from a biblical perspective.
